The unique trait of Piet Hein was, that he managed to unite art and science. During his time, art and science belonged to different worlds, but Piet Hein was ahead of his time. He had studied art, philosophy and theoretical physics, and over a period of almost 60 years, he created poetry, art, design and architecture.
Piet Hein said about his work:
“Art is the solution to problems which cannot be formulated clearly before they have been solved”
He strived for an absolute harmonious design, and with his mathematical intuition he worked on the superellipse curve and created what made him a renowned name – the SUPERELLIPSE®. The SUPERELLIPSE® is an harmonious geometric shape, which is a shape percieved as being something in between an ellipse and a rectangle. It is a shape that over time, has been used in furniture design, architecture and infrastructure. And lastly but not least, in the elegant UGO series from MAKE nordic.
In the 1940s, Piet Hein created what he called GROOK. There are countless grooks by Piet Hein, and most Danes recognize the hand writing and the drawings, that always bring a smile to ones face.
