J111
Chair
An award-winning chair
The J111 chair saw the light of day in 1971, and was designed by danish designer Poul M. Volther. This chair has a very special place in Volther’s heart, and he even won an award for his beautiful design. The J111 is as comfortable as it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and is just yet another good example of Poul M. Volther’s indescribable talent as a furniture architect. This chair is for you who love craftsmanship and want to combine timeless design with optimal seating comfort.
With its minimalist design, the J111 chair can be used throughout your home. It can be used around your dining table, in your entrance hall, in your bedroom, in your cottage or as extra chairs when you have guests. The J111 chair has a curved back and a wide seat that contributes to the high seating comfort, and slightly conical legs that create extra stability. These can be unscrewed so that the chair takes up as little space as possible if stowed away. This relaunched version of J111 is made at MAKE nordic in solid oak from FSC® certified forests (FSC® N002763) with a matt or black lacquer.
Materials
The J111 chair is made by hand by skilled cabinetmakers and then assembled and polished to make the chair get its soft and beautiful end result. The seat is constructed of 30 mm. oak veneer that makes it strong and stable. The chair’s legs and back are made of solid oak, and the back has contour – cut and bent pieces of wood that give the J111 its light and characteristic expression.
The J111 chair is handmade in FSC-certified oak, which is treated with a natural or black water-based lacquer. This is used to maintain a good indoor climate and avoid unnecessary impact on the environment. With this lacquer, the chair can stay beautiful for many years, without need for additional care. Spilled liquid can damage the surface of the chair if you leave it, without wiping the chair. J111 can be easily wiped off with a dry or hard-wrung cloth, without the need for other treatment.
In many years when your J111 chair has been through a lot and perhaps has been scratched here and there, it can be sanded down and re-treated.
Sustainability
The J111 chair is handmade in Europe by skilled carpenters. The chair is produced in FSC-certified oak, which means that during the production of this chair, nature, people involved in the process and animal and plant life are taken into account.
The J111 chair is wrapped in FSC cardboard as flat pack upon delivery. All you have to do when the chair is delivered, is to screw on the legs lightly before the chair is to be used. This is to avoid wasted space and unnecessary air in the packaging. This means that the chair is always transported with more furniture to minimize CO2 emissions via transportation. This thus contributes to a more environmentally friendly transport.
The designer - Poul M. Volther
Poul M. Volther (1923-2001) is one of Denmark’s best architects, with deep roots in good danish craftsmanship. His designs was based on Scandinavian functionalism, which with a modern twist combined the Bauhaus style and the classic, practical work. He thus avoided getting stuck in various short-lived trends, and instead designed works that captures the eye across time.
Poul M. Volther’s style was simple, functional and beautiful. Which has resulted in a large number of his design classics having found their way into thousands of Danish homes, where they are still found to this day.
