The GOLIAT chair has a sculptural weight that characterizes the Danish designer Poul M. Volther, who designed GOLIAT in 1953. The armchair was put into production for the first time in 2017 by MAKE nordic, where you can only find it at www.makenordic.com and see it in one of the 3 Danish showrooms in Copenhagen, Aarhus and Esbjerg. GOLIAT has a beautiful, minimalist look and a surprisingly high seating comfort. The chair can stand alone with its stylish lines, but it can also be very easily combined with other furniture to create a varied and personal expression in the home.
The unique GOLIAT armchair has finally got a stool
After several years of work, the beautiful armchair by Poul Volther has finally got its companion in the GOLIAT stool. Like the chair, the GOLIAT stool has an aesthetically pleasing look and is handmade in environmentally friendly materials in Denmark. The stool cushion’s oblique angle provides a very comfortable seating experience, while the cushion’s soft cold foam makes it comfortable for your legs to rest on the stool for hours.
Unique chair from 1953 by Poul M Volther sees the light of day
The GOLAIT chair has a sculptural weight that characterizes the Danish designer Poul M. Volther. He designed the chair for Copenhagen’s Carpenter exhibition in 1953, where it won an award. The chair was then produced by master carpenter Erhard Rasmussen and has never been in series production. This is therefore the first time the chair has seen the light of day. Today, GOLIAT is produced and sold exclusively by MAKE Nordic.
As the name illustrates, Volther has seen GOLIAT as a powerful and brave fighter who fully lives up to the other old Danish classics from the 1950s.
The forgotten chair was found
When Paul M. Volther had won the prize at the Carpenters’ Autumn Exhibition, the chair was sent to Sweden, where it was forgotten for a number of years. By chance, the architect’s son rediscovered the chair, many years after Poul M. Volther’s death. Jakob Volther received a newsletter from an auction house in Sweden, where his father’s beautiful chair was for sale. One of the few copies produced in the 1950s. Jakob Volther immediately saw the potential in the iconic armchair, which today is an important part of the furniture collection at MAKE nordic. After a few years, the GOLIAT chair has found a place in many homes and in many hearts.
Architect-designed chair in sustainable design
Poul M. Volther’s GOLIAT has a beautiful, minimalist look and a surprisingly high seating comfort. The chair can stand alone with its stylish lines, but it can also be very easily combined with other furniture to create a varied and personal expression in the home. There is no doubt that GOLIAT will contribute positively to any space with its unique and beautiful design language. The architect-designed chair is handmade in sustainable materials and is of a quality that can last a lifetime – and may be inherited for generations.
Create a personal expression
The expression of the GOLIAT chair can be varied with a choice of leather and wool in several colors to suit the individual home. The architect-designed chair is made of FSC-certified oak in optional treatment. Three cushions of environmentally friendly cold foam with beautiful, removable wool or leather cover and leather cords for attachment are included.
Goliat design armchair is handmade and Danish-made in FSC-certified wood.

Poul M Volther (1923-2001) belongs to a generation of popular Danish architects who have deep roots in good craftsmanship.
Poul M Volther’s style was based on Scandinavian functionalism, which with a modern twist found a middle ground between the Bauhaus style and the classic, practical work. In doing so, he avoided being caught up in various short-lived trends, where instead he designed works that could keep people enchanted by their beauty across time. The Corona chair is a good example of this. The Corona chair is without comparison Poul M Volther’s most famous piece of furniture. He is also behind a large number of other well-known Danish furniture classics, including the stick chairs, where you see that the strictly logical design with great focus on both the sitting experience and the structure of the chair, is mixed with a unique modern look as well as a flair for color and organic thinking.
Poul M Volther was originally a trained carpenter. He furthered his education at the School of Arts and Crafts, where he taught for many years at what is today called the Danish School of Design. Here he left his mark on hundreds of young furniture architects’ sense of the quality of the craft.
In 1949, he was employed at FDB’s studio with the help of the well-known Hans Wegner. Here he first worked under Børge Mogensen until 1959, when Mogensen left FDB and Volther became leader. Poul M Volther’s style was simple, functional and beautiful. Which has resulted in a large number of his design classics having found their way into many thousands of Danish homes, where they are still seen to this day.
We are so lucky here, at MAKE nordic, that we have three pieces of furniture by this designer, namely the beautiful GOLIAT armchair and the incredibly comfortable J111 and SOLDATEN dining table chairs.

Wool
Wool consists of fibers from sheep fleece and is due to its many good qualities an ideal material for furniture. Wool is both comfortable, durable, dirt-repellent and fire-retardant. The combination of these properties creates a material that is both soft, breathable and resists a high degree of wear. At the same time, wool stays nice for a long time, as wool resists a greater degree of dirt incl. embers from cigarettes and the like.
Care and stain removal
We recommend frequent vacuuming 1-2 times a week of the fabric to avoid stains as well as regular wiping of the fabric with a damp cloth.
