After many years of work the GOLIAT stool is finally here to accompany the GOLIAT armchair by Poul Volther. The stool has an aesthetically pleasing appearance because of the cushion’s oblique angle. This also provides a very comfortable seating experience while the cushion’s soft cold foam makes it comfortable for your legs to rest on the stool for hours.

The unique GOLIAT armchair has finally got a stool

After several years of work, the beautiful armchair by Poul Volther has finally got its companion in the GOLIAT stool. Like the chair, the GOLIAT stool has an aesthetically pleasing look and is handmade in environmentally friendly materials in Denmark. The stool cushion’s oblique angle provides a very comfortable seating experience, while the cushion’s soft cold foam makes it comfortable for your legs to rest on the stool for hours.

A little piece of furniture history

GOLIAT armchair is designed by Poul M. Volther in 1953 for Copenhagen’s Cabinetmaker exhibition. The GOLIAT armchair has so far only been produced in quite a few copies and was rediscovered by Poul M. Volther’s son at a Swedish auction. At MAKE nordic, we are very pleased to be able to continue to contribute to history.

An armchair in sustainable materials

GOLIAT is handmade in certified materials in collaboration with Danish suppliers. The chair is manufactured at a recognized furniture factory in West Jutland, and like our other furniture, it is FSC-certified wood. We choose FSC-certified wood out of consideration for both nature, humans and animals. The cushions consist of an eco-labeled cold foam that protects you and your loved ones against brominated flame retardants and other potentially harmful chemicals. The majority of our furniture textiles and leather qualities are also certified with the Nordic Ecolabel, the EU-flower or Oeko-tex for the sake of both the environment and your health.

You can read much more about our sustainable materials HERE.

If you want other fabric or leather than the ones shown, please contact us.

There may be longer delivery times and the price may vary if you choose special fabric.
You can seek inspiration for fabric and colors at Kvadrat or leather at Sørensen Læder.

Poul M. Volther

Poul M. Volther, who was born in 1923 and died in 2001, is part of the generation of popular Danish architects who have deep roots in good craftsmanship.

His style was based on Scandinavian functionalism, which with a more modern twist found a middle ground between the Bauhas style and the classic, practical work. In doing so, he avoided being caught up in various short-lived trends while instead designing works that kept people spellbound over their beauty across time.

A good example of this is Volther’s, without comparison, most famous design – the Corona chair. In addition to this, he is also behind a number of other well-known, Danish furniture classics, such as the wicker chairs, where you see that the strictly logical design with great focus on both the seating experience and the structure of the chair, mixed with a unique modern look and flair for color and organic thought.

Poul M. Volther was a trained carpenter and furthered his education at the School of Arts and Crafts, now known as the Danish School of Design, where he also taught for several years. Here he left his mark on hundreds of young furniture architects’ sense of quality of craft.

In 1949, he was employed at FDB’s design studio with the help of Hans Wegner. Here he first worked under Børge Mogensen until 1959, when Mogensen left FDB and Volther became leader.

Poul M. Volther’s style was simple, functional and beautiful. Which has resulted in a large number of his design classics having found their way into thousands of Danish homes, where they are still seen to this day.

We are so lucky here, at MAKE nordic, that we have three pieces of furniture by this designer, namely the beautiful GOLIAT armchair and the incredibly comfortable J111 and SOLDATEN dining table chairs.
